Avalanche Activity

TOR for 5/1/22 Areas of unstable windslab, steep sheltered NE thru S to W aspects, generally above 600m. Av Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Although wind exposed terrain will remain scoured, areas of unstable windslab will continue to develop and gain depth in wind sheltered locations, mainly North-East through South to West aspects, generally above 600 metres. Most affected will be coire rims, ridge flanks, gullies and steep convexities. Developing cornices will be fragile. Otherwise, a shallow and stable covering of new snow elsewhere. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Frequent, sometimes heavy snow showers, with significant drifting, will become more scattered and lighter by the afternoon with some brighter spells between showers. The gale force, generally North-West wind will progressively ease through the period, becoming light by the end of the afternoon. Remaining cold with the freezing level hovering around 400 metres with snow down to 200 metres. Observed Weather Influences: A day of frequent, occasionally intense snow showers, mostly of graupel, with significant drifting in a strong to gale force North-West wind. The freezing level was around 100 metres initially, rising to 250 metres by the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: There is a shallow covering of new snow, generally above 200 metres. Although most exposed terrain is scoured, areas of deep accumulations of unstable windslab exist in wind sheltered locations, mainly steep terrain, East to South aspects above 600 metres. North-East and South-West and West aspects are also affected due to cross loading. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
