Avalanche Activity

Stormy weather and new snow: Slab avalanches and loose snow avalanches are possible.

Over a wide area 20 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening above approximately 2300 m. As a consequence of new snow and a strong to storm force wind from westerly directions, large surface-area wind slabs will form in these regions. The fresh snow and the wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. In particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation and from starting zones at higher altitudes medium-sized to large dry avalanches are to be expected. They can occur easily or triggered naturally. Dry slab avalanches and dry loose snow avalanches are the main danger. The new snow and wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, in all aspects above approximately 2300 m. The backcountry and freeriding conditions are unfavourable. In addition an appreciable danger of moist and wet avalanches exists. Sometimes these are medium-sized. As the day progresses as the snowfall level rises there will be an increase in the danger.

Snowpack Structure

Less snow than usual is lying. On sunny slopes below approximately 2300 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on steep shady slopes. In the last few days avalanches were reported.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
