Avalanche Activity

GC 18/1 Snow PM dry SAT unstable windslab gullies+NW, N, E 900m+, scarp slopes+fragile cornices old snow firm+icy+gen stable Mod Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: The old snowpack will generally be stable with a firm and icy surface in exposed locations on the higher slopes. New snow and wind transport of existing deposits will form unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be in sheltered summit gullies and on steep scarp slopes with a North-West through North to Easterly aspect mainly above 900 metres. Fragile cornices will exist above some of these areas. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow will affect the area overnight becoming mainly dry on Saturday, (uncertainty regarding new snow quantity exists). Variable winds overnight will be strong for a time, daytime winds will be moderate to fresh from the Easterly quarter. Daytime freezing level. will be around 900 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Wet and mild conditions overnight gave way to colder conditions this morning. Snow showers on the upper slopes have been driven on by strong generally Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: The old snowpack is generally stable, localised areas of unstable windslab have formed in wind sheltered areas, gully exits and scarp slopes with an Easterly aspect are most affected. These accumulations are mainly thin and avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
