Lo esencial

Rain on new snow will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today.  Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.  Natural wet avalanches are likely to occur, and human triggered avalanches are very likely today.  Wait for temperatures to freeze the saturated snowpack before entering the mountains.

There has been over 3" of snow water equivelant received in the Blues since 1/3/22, with the Milkshakes snotel reporting 13" of snow in that time.  The forecast is calling for .8" of rain to fall onto the snowpack which will create very dangerous avalanche conditions.  Wet slab avalanches will be easily triggered by a rider in avalanche terrain today.  It's not the day to be in the mountains.

Avalanche Discussion

An avalanche warning has been issued for the Blue Mountains through 6 pm this evening.  Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.  If you do venture into the mountains, don't underestimate small terrain features such as sledding hills that are above gullies or cliffs (terrain traps).   Steep terrain with a saturated snowpack will be primed to avalanche.   Roof avalanches could be likely today as well.
