Lo esencial

It may be possible to trigger a large avalanche today. Wind slab snow at the surface and older weak snow deep in the snowpack remain a concern.  These could occur on slope configurations such as start zones, convexities, near ridges, sheltered mid-elevation terrain, and open slopes with wind-blown snow.  Continue to give yourself a wide margin to these problems, as these slides can often break bigger and be more destructive than we anticipate.

    The facets that have been causing a problem in our snowpack are now deeply buried several to many feet below the surface. The recipe of faceted weak, surgery snow below strong wind slab snow is still there and this problem needs time to heal before it will go away. The best way to mitigate this problem is avoidance.

    Wind from the SW during the Valentine storm on Thursday and Friday, along with abundant new snow available for transport, caused a natural avalanche cycle in the BWRA on Friday. Saturday's clear weather allowed for good visibility, and we saw that wind slab avalanches released in near treeline and above treeline terrain on Northerly aspects. Pay attention to areas where the wind has been piling up snow. Start zones, below ridges, in gullies, and cross-loaded slopes could still be holding wind slab snow.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm and wind slab snow from this week have shown evidence of bonding on Saturday. Wind effected snow was dense, fist and 4 F + in hand hardness. The Persistent Slab problem is still on our list and needs time to heal. The wind will pick back up today, watch out for blowing snow and fresh wind slab formation.
