Avalanche Activity

NC for 6.1:Snow! Avalanches likely, SE to SW asp. abv 800m. Cross loading. Cornices! Unstable on steep banks below. Considerable Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: Poorly bonded windslab will develop and progressively become deeper and more widespread. Avalanches are likely on steep South-East to South-West aspects above 800m. Areas especially affected will be wind sheltered locations such as coire rims, gully exits and crag aprons. Fragile cornices will also develop. On these aspects localised unstable windslab will form on steep banks between 400m and 800m. Cross loading will affect many other areas. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Significant snowfall above 200 metres throughout the forecast period. Moderate to strong North-North-Easterly winds will steadily increase to gale force during the day, and back to become Northerly in direction. The freezing level will be around 400 metres. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day with light South-Easterly winds and spells of sunshine. Freezing at all levels. ObservedSnowStability: A thin covering of unconsolidated snow lies on all aspects above 400m. Above 1000 metres isolated generally stable accumulations are present in wind sheltered and steep places on mainly Easterly to Southerly aspects. These areas are limited in extent. Elsewhere, snow cover is thin, but deeper in wind sheltered hollows which are mostly avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
