Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab will be present in wind sheltered locations on West to North aspects above 900 metres, with moderately bonded snow present below this altitude. Fragile cornices will exist above these slopes. Cross-loaded accumulations may be also encountered on South-West and North-East aspects above 900 metres. Open slopes will be wind scoured and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Forecast Weather Influences: Mainly dry with some light snow forecast from mid-afternoon. South-South-Easterly winds throughout the period, gale force overnight, strong during the day. 450 metre freezing level overnight, 550 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Severe gale to storm force South-Easterly winds. Occasional light snow showers. Freezing level around 450 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Persistent redistribution of snow has formed moderately to weakly bonded windslab in wind sheltered locations only, on mainly West to North aspects above 900 metres. Moderately bonded accumulations are present below this altitude and cross-loaded deposits exist on South-West and North-East aspects above 900 metres. Fragile cornices have formed. Most open slopes are wind scoured and icy, with exposed ridges stripped bare. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
