Avalanche Activity

CM for 10/2/22 New weak windslab NE to SE aspects above 800m. Better stability in wind exposed locations. Considerable Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will continue to develop primarily on steep North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Areas mostly affected will be sheltered steep coire rims, headwalls, and gully exits. New fragile cornice development is expected above indicated aspects. Better stability on all ridges and wind exposed locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Further snow showers will continue overnight easing by mid-morning before dying away by the end of the period. The Freezing Level will remain around 300 metres overnight, rising slightly to 500 metres, then lowering again to around 400 metres after midday. The strong West-South-West and South-Westerly airflow will ease and become North-Westerly during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Cooler conditions with snow showers throughout the period. The winds have been strong West-South-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Limited quantities of fresh snow exist at all elevations. Above 700 metres new snow instabilities were noted, with weak windslab development in sheltered, lee locations. The areas affected are primarily steep coire rims, headwalls, and gully exits on North-East to South-East aspects. Many scarp slopes are windblown. Below 700 metres some localised drifting has also occurred in sheltered lee locations. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
