Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche in freshly drifted snow at upper elevations. The recent winds and fresh snow created slabs that rest on a weak layer about twelve to eighteen inches below the surface. You should look for and avoid hollow-sounding snow that supports your weight, smooth, rounded pillows of snow that crack underneath you, or areas with recent avalanches. If you notice any of these signs of unstable snow, seek slopes less than 30 degrees for travel options.
