Considerable avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

As a consequence of a sometimes strong northerly wind, wind slabs will form. The fresh and older wind slabs are in some cases prone to triggering. Avalanches can in some places be released by a single winter sport participant and reach large size in isolated cases. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snowpack The occasionally strong northeasterly wind will transport the still loosely bonded fresh snow of recent days. Snow drift accumulations will form and be prone to triggering in some cases. Underneath the fresh snow and snow drift accumulations of recent days, weak layers exist in the old snowpack over a wide area, in particular from southern Valais to Grisons on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. In some places avalanches can still be released in these weak layers by people. As a consequence of warming and rain, last week the old snowpack became moist on north facing slopes below approximately 2500 m and thoroughly moist on west and east facing slopes below 2600 to 2800 m. South facing slopes were thoroughly most up to the high Alpine regions. Observed weather review Monday, 03.04.2023 During the night a little more snow fell in showers in the north. The snowfall level was approximately 1200 m. Valais and the south were partly clear. During the day in the north and east there was sometimes dense low stratus-like cloud cover. Above the cloud it was sunny on the mountain peaks. In Valais and the south it was mostly sunny. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between -2 °C in the southwest and -6 °C in the northeast Wind Light to moderate, at elevated altitudes strong, from the northeast Outlook through Thursday, 06.04.2023 On Wednesday and Thursday, mostly clear skies during the night will be followed by mostly sunny weather on both days. The wind will be light to moderate from the northeast to northwest. On Wednesday, with a midday temperature of about -6 °C at 2000 m, it will be wintry and cold; on Thursday it will become a little milder. The avalanche danger will continue to decrease.
