    • Above 1,800 m

Avalanche Activity

Moist avalanches and wet avalanches are the main danger.

Above approximately 1800 m small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized wet slab avalanches are possible. In the late morning the likelihood of avalanches being released will increase gradually in particular on very steep sunny slopes. Especially bases of rock walls are unfavourable. Ground avalanches are possible. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack remains in most cases subject to considerable local variations. The amount of snow is subject to significant local variations. Below approximately 1800 m only a little snow is lying. The snowpack will be well bonded in particular on shady slopes. On sunny slopes the snowpack is moister. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures a crust will form on the surface. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust only at high altitudes and will soften during the day. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls a lot of snow is lying.
