Avalanche Activity

LO for 17/1 Cold and settled. Little change in snowpack. Instabilities in windslab on N to SE aspects. Large cornices. Consid hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: The cold conditions will maintain weaknesses within the snowpack. Areas of unstable windslab will remain above 900 metres in wind sheltered locations on mainly, but not exclusively, North through East to South-East facing slopes and gullies. Some large fragile cornices will exist above these aspects. Below 900 metres stability will be better. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The cold and settled conditions will continue. Although a few light snow showers are possible it will remain generally dry throughout. Moderate winds will be from the West. The freezing level will be around 200 metres. Observed Weather Influences: It was dry and cold day with temperatures remaining below freezing in all but the lowest glens. Moderate winds were from the South-West. ObservedSnowStability: Little change has occurred in the snowpack. Windslab deposits, some poorly bonded, were observed on many steep wind-sheltered locations on mainly North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Some large and weak looking cornices also exist. Evidence of a recent (sometime in the last 48 hours or so) cornice triggered avalanche was observed on an Easterly aspect at an altitude of about 1080 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
