Watch out for areas of soft wet snow which may slide under your feet on steep terrain. Avoid wet snow deeper than boot-top on very steep slopes to help avoid the avalanche hazard today.

    Watch out for isolated areas of wet snow on steep slopes that may slide under your feet as a point release wet snow avalanche. Look for ski/boot penetration as a clue. Wet snow deeper than boot-top will be heavy and potentially difficult to manage as a sluff. Steep slopes on northeast, east and southeast aspects are the areas where you’ll find pockets of wet snow up to 10 inches thick. 

    Frequent use of hand shears will help determine how easily the wet softer snow will slide on the bed surface. If an isolated block of soft surface snow is easy to slide on a smooth bed surface, the chance of triggering a loose wet avalanche is greater than if that block is stubborn to slide. 

    The chance for triggering a wet snow avalanche will slowly decrease as temperatures fall back below freezing overnight tonight. 

Avalanche Discussion

Recent slabs formed Monday have been warmed, refrozen, warmed again and wetted from rain last night. They’ve lost any structure to propagate as a slab, and after prolonged warming have likely become better adhered to the melt freeze crust they rest on. This increase in bonding reduces the chance for triggering an avalanche. Also note that very warm temperatures have promoted melting and settlement. In the last 24 hours, the total height of snow on the summit decreased 4 inches and more than 2 inches at Hermit Lake. Thinking in terms of CMAH, distribution is the same, sensitivity and size has decreased, pushing the overall hazard rating to Low. 

Be ready for hard icy snow surfaces tomorrow when temperatures fall back below freezing at all elevations tonight. 

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
