Lo esencial

Over a foot of new snow and strong winds have created dangerous conditions on steep, wind loaded slopes. Human triggered avalanches are likely and could break 1-3 feet deep. An avalanche failing in the recent snow could break deeper into old, weak snow. Avoid steep leeward slopes and pay attention to red flags such as collapsing (whoompfing), shooting cracks, and signs of wind loading.

    A week of wind, and a proper storm have created wind drifts on leeward slopes. Wind slabs could break 1-3 feet deep on steep slopes, failing on a change in snow density below that slab. Carefully evaluate if a slope has been wind loaded before engaging. If active wind loading isn’t present, look for fresh cornices above slopes, cracking around your sled or skis, and snow that feels upside down or slabby. A wind slab avalanche could overlap with the persistent slab problem and break into a larger and more consequential avalanche.

    The recent snow is stressing buried weak layers and needs time to adjust. An avalanche failing on a buried persistent weak layer could break 3-5 feet deep and easily bury or injure a rider. Avoid being on or under very steep wind affected slopes that harbor this weak layer, where the weight of a person could tip the scales and trigger a slide.

Avalanche Discussion

The snowpack needs time to adjust to the recent load. The recent storm has caused more avalanche instability for the time being, but will help to slowly heal the persistent weak layers in the long run. 

The snow is starting to stack up and improved riding can be found on low angle slopes and slopes that have not been hammered by the recent westerly winds.
