Lo esencial

It is possible to trigger a persistent slab avalanche 2-3 feet deep on protected and or shaded slopes facing east through northwest, above 6500'. Approach these slopes with caution and adhere to good travel protocols, such as traveling one at a time after evaluating the snowpack.

Small dry-loose avalanches or snow sluffs are also possible in steep or extreme terrain and could push you into terrain traps such as cliffs and gullies.

    Prior to entering terrain steeper than 30 degrees, evaluate the snowpack for weak layers of near-surface facets and surface hoar that may be buried at the new/old snow interface 2-3 feet down from the surface.

    The most sensitive slopes may be at mid-elevations near water, such as creeks and lakes, where surface hoar was buried and areas remained cold during inversions that heated the upper elevations to the upper 40s. Upper elevations have shown near-surface facets as the propagating failure layer. 

    This problem will be hard to trigger, easier for snowmachines, yet if triggered, could be large: propagate /break wide and be unsurvivable. 

    ***Likely trigger points would be where the slab is thin, near ridgelines, summits, near rocks or trees, on rollovers or convexities, and slopes that don't have support at the bottom where the slab is under stress.

Avalanche Discussion

 The last storm cycle (Feb. 8-Feb 10) deposited 2-3 feet of snow, colder and lighter than it started. Rain fell,  to between 6'000 and 7500' depending where you are in the valley . The new snow fell on surfaces that had been dry for almost a month. Winds formed slabs at ridgetops, and loose dry snow is now abundant. Wind activity has calmed down, but it remains possible to trigger a wind slab or a dry loose avalanche on east through northwest aspects that are steeper than 30 degrees. On most slopes, dry loose or wind slabs should remain small; however, in exposed terrain with cliffs and other traps such as gullies or depressions, the consequences could be severe.

Bonding of the new snow was good on the west and south slopes, but observations on shaded northerly aspects continue to reveal persistent weak layers of near-surface facets and buried surface hoar. These weak layers vary in sensitivity and distribution, but both can propagate widely or in surprising ways.

Please keep your eyes on your partners and stay spread out on and near slopes steeper than 30 degrees, especially in shaded, protected, mid-elevation terrain and terrain traps near creeks or lakes.
