Avalanche conditions are dangerous. You could trigger an avalanche in new and wind-drifted snow at all elevations. As winds increase through the day, wind slab avalanches could occur naturally. Watch for blowing and rapidly accumulating snow and new snow struggling to stick to the old, harder snow surface as signs that avalanche danger is increasing.

    What and where is it:Watch out for new wind slabs that are forming throughout the day on west-facing and north-facing aspects. Early in the day, these slabs may be limited in size but will have the potential to become larger and more reactive with increasing winds throughout the day. Where new snow is drifting onto existing steep snow slopes, these slabs could be large enough to bury you. 

    How can you recognize it: Watch for shooting cracks in the snowpack and new snow drifting and accumulating into wind-protected areas that is deeper than the tops of your boots. Use your hand, shovel, or ski pole to identify snow drifts that are hard-over-soft in structure as a sign you have found a developing wind slab.

    How can you manage it:Thoughtful route finding, and identifying locations of new wind slabs can help you avoid traveling through this avalanche problem.

    What and where is it:A fresh blanket of new snow on steep east-facing and south-facing terrain may struggle to stick to the old, hard snow surface. As snow accumulates, expect sluffing of new snow in steep terrain. While these small avalanches may not be enough to bury you, they could have enough force and weight to cause a fall in steep terrain. 

    How can you recognize it: Watch out for new snow that struggles to stick to the old, firm snow surface. Soft, unconsolidated snow that is deeper than the tops of your boots should put this avalanche problem on your radar. Watch out for heavier, denser snow or mixed precipitation later in the afternoon which could add weight to the softer, lighter snow from the morning. 

    How can you manage it:Consider the consequences of a fall in steep terrain if heavy sluffing is occurring.

Avalanche Discussion

New snow and wind will increase avalanche hazards throughout the day and overnight. In the morning, expect the forecasted avalanche problems to be smaller and less hazardous than later in the day, when accumulations are higher and winds increase significantly. 

Strategic travel in avalanche terrain is critical to staying safe in the mountains today as conditions could be dynamic and changing rapidly. Be vigilant and consistent with making snow observations that verify or disprove the forecasted conditions. Consistent observations and re-evaluations of your travel plans will help you make informed decisions for traveling in avalanche terrain. 

At low elevations, it is possible that you do not find a new avalanche problem, but a new blanket of new snow. However, don’t write-off the possibility of encountering an avalanche problem that could affect your travel on steep, snow-covered slopes. 

Overnight, expect increasing avalanche danger on east-facing slopes as winds change direction and increase in speed.  This change is forecast to happen late tonight and will redistribute the wind slab avalanche problem.
