Southwest winds overnight accompanied a little new snow, forming small wind slabs on the lee sides of some terrain features. Take time to investigate this potential avalanche problem before committing to steep avalanche terrain. At lower elevations, the snow surface should remain frozen, and normal caution travel advice is expected.

    Since midnight, southwesterly winds at 12,000ft have averaged in the 20's with gusts into the 30 mph range. During that time, there was a little bit of new snow available to be redistributed into wind slabs on the lee sides of ridgelines and cross-loaded terrain features. These slabs will be most reactive on the northern side of the compass, where they may have formed over small facets at upper elevations. Take time to investigate this pointal avalanche problem before moving into higher consequence terrain. 

    This avalanche failed on the lee side of a cross-loaded ridge of Mt Axtell earlier this winter. 

Avalanche Discussion

Any new wind slabs are expected to mostly be small in size, given the small amount of snow that was available for transport. More snow will have accumulated near and above 12,000ft, so perhaps there could be a larger slab lingering on an alpine terrain feature with a big fetch. There are lots of rough old snow surfaces out there, so on some terrain, these small slabs may not be reactive. Smoother snow surfaces can be found on some northerly facing terrain, and in the same area, some slopes will be holding small facets on the old snow interface. New slabs will be more reactive in these locations. Large swaths of the forecast area will be covered by normal caution travel advice, while a few areas will have heightened avalanche conditions for potential new wind slabs. 

Colder temperatures and a cloudy sky will keep snow surfaces frozen. This will limit the ability of a loose avalanche to gouge into the wet snowpack below, as we saw over the last couple of days.
