Another very warm and sunny day with fuel wet avalanche problems. Wet loose avalanches will become widespread today on slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Above freezing overnight temperatures and near record daytime highs today will turn the snowpack into a sloppy mess by this afternoon. Wet avalanches could become destructive by this afternoon as wet snow gouges deeper into the upper snowpack. By this afternoon, avoid being directly underneath steep slopes that have been getting drenched by the sun.

    Upper elevation temperatures have remained above freezing overnight. Very warm and sunny conditions today will create wet loose avalanches on any slope steeper than 35 degrees. Wet loose slides will not discriminate today and may run on all aspects. Most wet loose avalanches will be small (less than D1.5). This afternoon, wet loose slides could gouge deeper into the snowpack and become larger in size (D2). Wet loose avalanches are most likely on slopes that are getting direct solar radiation. Surface crusts may be thin and only slightly capping wet, mushy snow underneath. The snowpack below 7000' is very saturated and becoming isothermal. Dig down with your hand or pole to see how supportive the crust is. Look to see how wet and mushy the snow is beneath the surface crust. If you're sinking into wet, manky snow it's time to switch to a different aspect or call it a day. Avoid spending time in terrain traps like valley bottoms and underneath long-running gullies.

    Additional Discussion

    Cornices are very large this time of year. These beasts like to peel off during warm spells. They are notorious for failing much farther back than anticipated. Give them plenty of space right now.

For the past 2-3 weeks, the upper snowpack has been undergoing change with warm temperatures and rain. Last week, a quick-hitting storm dropped over a foot of new snow and temperatures stayed cool and wintry for most of the week. Last weekend, temperatures shot up, producing large wet loose avalanches across all aspects of steep terrain. We're in the midst of another abrupt warming trend today, with daytime high temperatures expected to reach near record highs. The faucet has been turned on as melt water continues to saturate the upper several feet of snowpack. Areas that are becoming very saturated are solar aspects and terrain below 7000'. If you travel in the mountains today, make sure to observe how supportive recent crusts are. Are they breaking down and becoming soft? Are you punching through to wet snow underneath? If so, avoid being on or underneath steep slopes where wet loose avalanches are likely. Be sure to give large, over-hanging cornices plenty of space this time of year.
