Warming temperatures and evening rain will increase the chances of triggering an avalanche on steep slopes above 3000’ where recent snow has drifted. You can reduce your risk by steering around drifts of wet soft snow.

    What and where is it: Temperatures will rise well above freezing today for the first time since December 29, which may make recently drifted snow more sensitive to human triggering as it warms. These wind slabs are mostly found in east facing ravines and are generally 6 to 20 inches thick, and up to 3 feet thick below steep easterly aspects.  How can you recognize it: Look for fresh, smooth “pillowy” drifts on the lee side of ridges, gullies, and rollovers. Use boot penetration and probing with a ski pole to gauge slab thickness and cohesiveness. Given the density of the slabs, they are unlikely to give feedback such as shooting cracks as an indicator to sensitivity. How can you manage it: Reduce your exposure by identifying and avoiding wind-loaded slopes. When transitioning onto a wind slab, pay attention to the thickness and dig into the snow and investigate carefully before committing.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent observations and forecaster travel yesterday showed that new wind slabs are generally stubborn, but weak layers do exist both at the interface between newer wind slabs and the bed surface, and in isolated deeper layers around 4,500 feet. While these slabs have not been particularly reactive under cold conditions and have a variable distribution, today they become a concern due to warming temperatures.Today’s warming is a significant red flag. Temperatures will rise well above freezing for the first time since late December, which can increase slab sensitivity, especially in recently drifted snow. As the snow warms, bonds within the slab and at the slab interface can weaken, making human-triggered avalanches more likely.

Later today, rain is expected, particularly at lower and mid elevations, which may further destabilize the snowpack. Even light rain can reduce slab strength, add weight, and decrease friction on hard underlying surfaces. Combined with warming temperatures, this creates the potential for previously stubborn slabs to become more reactive as the day progresses.

The takeaway for today is that conditions may change quickly. Wind slabs that felt manageable yesterday could become increasingly sensitive, especially in east- and southeast-facing terrain.
