Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs at elevated altitudes. The fresh and older wind slabs represent the main danger. Also shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable.

As a consequence of a strong northerly wind, further wind slabs formed in the last two days in particular at elevated altitudes. In particular above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases and above the tree line. In gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a crust.

Snowpack Structure

The wind slabs are lying on unfavourable layers. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a crust.
