Gale Northerly winds and rain/snow are forecast. Be on the lookout for Wind Slab formation particularly, on slopes facing North East through to South West above about 1700m. Be prepared to alter your plans if conditions appear likely to deteriorate rapidly.

Loose Wet avalanche activity is a possibility if it begins to rain. These failures could occur on any aspect. Head for home if persistent rain looks likely.

Recent Avalanche Activity

No avalanche activity reported recently.

If you see evidence of avalanches in the back country please enter a public observation.

Current Snowpack Conditions

New snow will land on a shallow, weak snow pack. Buried rime crusts have been identified in places. Also, recent cold clear nights have been driving facet development (weak, sugary forms). Crust and facet layers will be tested over the next few days as the load sitting on them increases.

Mountain Weather

Monday - rain developing late morning with heavy falls possible. Snow down to 1400m. Northerly winds rising to gale/severe gale force. Freezing level - 1300m climbing to 1900m in the afternoon.

Sliding Danger

Limited sliding danger at present.

Forecast Confidence

Low

  • We are uncertain due to a limited number of field observations.
  • We are uncertain due to rapidly changing freezing levels.
  • We are uncertain due to the timing of the incoming weather system.
