Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

The new snow and snowdrifts of the past seven days are covering a faceted, weak old snowpack at high altitude, especially on western, northern and eastern slopes:

  • Especially north of the Rhône-Rhine line, the covering layer is often thick. Avalanches triggered by people are only possible in isolated cases here. However, avalanches can become large.
  • As the avalanche reports of the last few days have shown, avalanches are still possible in weak layers near the ground, especially in southern Valais, as well as in a strip from northern Ticino via northern Grisons, the northern areas of central Grisons to Lower Engadine. Here, too, avalanches can become large.
  • South of this region, in the southern areas of central Grisons, southern Grisons and central Ticino, there is still little snow. However, avalanches are also possible in these regions, especially where strong northerly winds deposited snowdrift accumulations on the thin, mostly completely faceted and loose snowpack on Tuesday.

Outlook

It will be sunny and mild in the mountains. The zero-degree level will be around 3000 m. There will be light winds.

The danger of dry avalanches will slowly decrease. Particularly in southern Valais and in Grisons, avalanches can still be released in the weak old snowpack and become large. In the north, small and medium-sized gliding avalanches are still possible on sunny steep slopes.
