Avalanche Activity

Slight increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

As a consequence of a moderate to strong southwesterly wind, small wind slabs will form in the afternoon in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, especially on extremely steep slopes. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack on shady slopes. These can be released. In particular along the border with Switzerland the avalanche prone locations are a little more prevalent. Mostly the avalanches are small and can be released by a single winter sport participant. Caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 5 cm of snow, and up to 15 cm in some localities, will fall on Thursday above approximately 2000 m. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 1800 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. The snowpack is not distinctly layered. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals. Tuesday: Isolated small moist avalanches have been released as a consequence of warming. As a consequence of rising temperatures the snowpack will settle on Wednesday.

Tendency

In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the sometimes strong northwesterly wind.
