Snowpack

On Friday, snow fell widely as far down as the tree line, mostly at altitude with 20 to 40 cm on the central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps and 10 to 20 cm in Grisons.

The snow line is currently between 2800 m in the south-west and 2000 m in the north-east. A large area of cohesive snowpack is mainly to be found on shady slopes in bowls above approximately 2500 to 3000 m and generally in the glaciated high Alpine regions.

In the high Alpine regions, the stormy southerly wind will transport the new snow and also some old snow.

TrendWednesday

The precipitation will end on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, it will initially be quite sunny and appreciably cooler.

The avalanche danger will temporarily decrease slightly on Wednesday. There is barely any likelihood of naturally triggered avalanches, but the avalanche situation remains precarious for alpine tours, especially in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation.

Thursday

On Wednesday evening, precipitation will return, again heavy in the south and far west. The snowfall level will once again be at around 3000 m and there will be a stormy southerly wind. During Thursday, it will become partly sunny and cooler from the west.

The avalanche danger in the high Alpine regions will increase again, with a significant increase in the Bernina region.
