Avalanche Activity

Gliding snow represents the main danger. Fresh wind slabs are to be avoided.

More medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large gliding avalanches are possible. This applies on steep grassy slopes below approximately 2600 m. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided. The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases in particular on very steep north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. At elevated altitudes the avalanche prone locations are a little more prevalent. Avalanches can reach medium size. In addition individual small to medium-sized loose snow avalanches are possible. In the event of prolonged bright spells this applies on extremely steep slopes, in particular.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow has fallen since Monday. The wind was moderate. As a consequence of new snow and wind, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines. They are lying on soft layers on north and east facing slopes. The snowpack is wet all the way through and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a crust. This applies on sunny slopes in all altitude zones, as well as on shady slopes below approximately 2600 m.
