Lo esencial

Wind slabs remain possible to human trigger.

Continually assess as you travel. If the snow looks wind-affected or feels dense or stiff, back off.

Problemas de aludes

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1–2

Dry snow at upper elevations is being redistributed by moderate to strong winds. New wind slabs are likely developing over a previous surface of hard wind pressed snow and/or a crust.

  • Persistent Slabs

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1.5–2.5

A buried layer of facets in the snowpack is expected to be more reactive in wind-affected thin rocky terrain features. Triggering of this layer is less likely where a supportive crust is present.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about how quickly persistent slabs are gaining strength.

Avalanche Summary

On Saturday, a very large natural wind slab avalanche was reported that occurred during the storm.

Snowpack Summary

New low density snow is incrementally accumulating and being redistributed by moderate southwest wind over a mix of moist or refrozen recent storm snow.

At upper elevations heavily wind affected surfaces can be found. Hard wind slab, and wind pressed snow with new small wind slabs forming are likely.

Below this, a layer of facets from early February is roughly 50 cm deep, and a thick crust from late January up to 100 cm deep. These layers are less likely to be triggered where a supportive crust is present.

Weather Summary

Monday Night
Partly cloudy. 1 to 3 cm of snow. 30 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -10 °C.

Tuesday

Wednesday
Mix of sun and clouds. 1 to 3 cm of snow. 30 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -8 °C.

Thursday
Mostly sunny. 10 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -9 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Be aware of the potential for large avalanches due to buried weak layers.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation, aspect, and exposure to wind.
  • Avoid steep, rocky, and wind-affected areas where triggering slabs is more likely.
