Avalanche Activity

NC for 17/2. Snow Showers. Fresh windslab on sheltered NE to SE aspects above 900m. Stable on other aspects. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh areas of poorly bonded windslab will be deposited above 900 metres in locations sheltered from the strong winds. North-East to South-East aspects will be most affected. In locations exposed to the strong winds the snowpack will be shallow and generally stable. Fresh windslab will also accumulate below 900 meters, but stability will be better. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight snow showers are expected to ease through the day. Strong winds will be from the West. The freezing level will be around 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: The freezing level rose to around 1100 meters. It was a mostly dry day with a few snow showers later in the afternoon. Southerly winds were light to moderate.

ObservedSnowStability: Due to mild settled conditions the snowpack is slowly consolidating. A thin icy crust from a period of freezing rain covering the snowpack at higher levels also helped to improve stability. Any fresh deposits during the afternoon were shallow and not significant. Stability is generally good throughout. The avalanche hazard is Low.
