Avalanche Activity

LO for 06.02. Instabilities on N through E to SE aspects above 800m. Fragile cornices developing. Avalanche Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Areas of poorly bonded windslab will be present above 1000 metres on North through East to South-East aspects, notably around corrie rims and gully tops. Fragile cornices will also continue to build above these aspects. Between 800 and 1000 metres, localised accumulations of windslab are expected to form in wind sheltered locations on the same aspects. Wind scoured slopes will be frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Observed Weather Influences: Storm Force Westerly winds. Frequent showers falling as snow above 1000m. The freezing level rose to around 1000m by mid-morning, then slowly began to drop. At 1400hrs the air temperature had dropped to -2.6 degrees at 1200m. ObservedSnowStability: Unstable windslab is present on North through East to South-East aspects above 1000m.
