Avalanche Activity

NC for 4.12 New unstable windslab mainly on S-W-NW aspcts abve 900m. Weakly bonded where overlying surface hoar. Cornices. Haz Mod

Forecast Snow Stability: New snow and redistribution of existing soft snow will form fresh unstable windslab in sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations will be on South through West to North-West aspects above 900 metres. This will be weakly bonded where it overlies the existing surface hoar. Unstable cornices will form above these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will be generally East-North-Easterly, and will become strong overnight. Snowfall is expected throughout the period. It will remain cold, with the freezing level rising to around 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry cold (-6C on summits) day, with light generally South-South-East winds. ObservedSnowStability: There is a covering of unconsolidated snow on all aspects, having gained depth mainly above 900 metres. Deeper accumulations are present in sheltered areas, mainly on East through South to West aspects above 900 metres. These are generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
