Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow and the wind slabs represent the main danger.

The new snow and wind slabs of the last few days can be released in some cases above approximately 2300 m. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally at high altitudes, caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In particular along the border with France, along the border between Valais and Italy the avalanche prone locations are a little more prevalent. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 30 cm in some localities, has fallen since Sunday. Along the border with Switzerland 0 to 2 cm of snow has fallen. The easterly wind has transported only a little snow. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. At higher altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In all regions below approximately 2000 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
