Snow and Avalanche Discussion
A week of widespread above freezing temperatures induced a wet snow avalanche cycle likely peaked last Sunday-Tuesday. We have turned the corner toward more typical spring-time weather. After a mild and sunny start to Friday, clouds moved in during the afternoon and light snow began falling. A solid freeze down to below 5,000 ft on Friday night along with a skiff of new snow, partial sunshine on Saturday allowed snow surfaces to soften to above 7000 ft. The solid freeze limited the potential for loose wet activity on Saturday.
Springtime Travel Hazards
-
Despite the cooler weather, cornices are likely sagging and are most likely to fail when stressed by direct sunshine. Avoid traveling on cornices as they often break back further than you anticipate. Limit your exposure if traveling on slopes below large overhanging cornices.
-
With water likely moving through the snowpack, particularly at lower elevations, creeks are now becoming exposed and difficult to cross. Plan your routes accordingly.
-
There may be the potential for glide avalanches to release on steeper slopes with smooth underlying bed surfaces, such as glaciated terrain or permanent snowfields if water has percolated through the snowpack.
