Today, it is unlikely that you will trigger an avalanche in the majority of terrain across the region. Isolated pockets of unstable snow might exist in very steep terrain. If engaging with avalanche terrain, travel one at a time and keep eyes on your partner. Avoid traveling in terrain traps that could make even a small avalanche more consequential.

    The likelihood of triggering a persistent slab avalanche is unlikely, however, it is not impossible. Weak snow that formed in November is generally buried 2 to 5 feet deep. We have not seen any avalanches on this layer since New Year’s Eve, but poor structure still exists in some terrain. You are most likely to impact this weak layer in areas that are thin from lack of snow, wind effected or areas that have avalanched previously. Avoid very steep, rocky, convex slopes, especially if it looks thin.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday favored areas of Togwotee received around 2 inches of snow. We haven’t seen or heard of a significant avalanche since New Year’s Eve. The snowpack has generally adjusted and is feeling comfortable in its skin. That being said, Togwotee Pass, and all of our forecast zones are large and there can be differences across the area where some places might still have pockets of unstable snow. There likely won’t be any warning signs that a slope is unstable, so give yourself a margin of safety around terrain described in the persistent slab problem and stay vigilant of changing conditions. No matter the avalanche danger, only expose one person at a time to avalanche hazard and avoid terrain traps that could make even a small avalanche consequential.
