Blowing snow should be quite obvious on Friday and should help you identify slopes of concern. Steer around steep wind-drifted slopes if you observe fresh slabs forming or notice signs of instability such as shooting cracks or whumphs.

    Increasing wind speeds, light precipitation (.25 swe) , and snow available for transport will keep wind slabs on the menu on Friday. If you’re looking for a wind slab, you’ll likely find these hard slabs on the leeward sides of ridges, below cornices, and at the base of cliff or rock bands. Don’t be surprised if you find these wind slabs further down slope than usual due to recent strong winds. 

    Blowing snow should be easy to spot on Friday, so paying attention to where snow is drifting will help you identify possible problematic slopes. You can also look for rounded pillows of snow, textured surfaces, and fresh drifts to help you identify where the wind has been at work. And as always, pump the brakes and seek more sheltered slopes if you see shooting cracks or hear snow that sounds hollow like a drum.

Avalanche Discussion

Friday is shaping up to be a transition day (or at least morning) before a potent storm takes aim at the Hood zone Friday evening. Look for rising wind speeds and increasing shower activity during the afternoon hours. This may result in increasing avalanche danger during the late afternoon in more exposed, alpine areas where shower activity is expected to intensify accompanied by very strong SW wind speeds.

Over the past few days, forecasters and observers have reported isolated whumphs in the Gunsight Ridge area and propagating results( observation) near Vista Ridge on the 3/21 crust interface. On average, this crust sits 2-3’ below the snow surface and has subtle, but slightly weaker grains above and below the crust. In some locations, you may even find graupel above this crust.  Right now observations are still sparse and we have lots of gaps in our knowledge regarding the distribution/reactivity of this layer. With more precipitation in the forecast, this interface will be worth keeping tabs on and digging down to see what you find. If you dig down, let us know what you see by submitting an observation.
