Light new snowfall and strong winds may create shallow slabs of wind-drifted snow at upper elevations. You’ll find these slabs forming in the alpine, below cornices, and lee-sides of ridges. Give yourself some space from steep slopes that show signs of recent wind drifting.

    Light new snow and strong NW winds will combine to create shallow wind slabs at upper elevations. Initially, these slabs may not bond well to the underlying slick crust so they could be quite reactive once they form.

    Look for these slabs to develop on E-SE facing slopes; mainly on the lee-side of ridges, below cornices, and in the alpine.  

    Seer around steep slopes being actively wind loaded or show signs of recent loading. Use visual clues to help you identify slopes of concern. Look for wind-textured snow, pillow-like slabs, and sharp cornices forming.  If you notice these signs, adjust your travel plans to avoid these potentially hazardous spots.

    On Friday, you may notice shallow instabilties in wind-drifted snow like this.  Steer around steep slopes if you see cracks shooting out from your sled/skis, snow sliding easily, or notice active snow transport.

Avalanche Discussion

This short-wave system won't be a big producer for the east slopes of the Cascades. The eastern edges of the zone will be lucky if they get a flurry or two out of this.  Areas further west may pick up a few inches, however, the strong winds will likely be the main story.  The bulk of the precipitation and the strongest winds occur in the morning hours, so you’ll likely see the greatest avalanche danger during that same time.  

New snow will fall on a patchwork of surfaces. At mid and lower elevations, new snow will likely fall on a thin melt-freeze crust or even moist snow. At upper elevations,  it will likely fall on firm wind-drifted snow, slick crusts, or settled powder on shaded slopes. 

Saturday should bring another stronger storm coming from the NE. This system could favor parts of the east-south and should bring a more meaningful spike in avalanche danger. Stay tuned…
