The avalanche danger may look the same but the snowpack continues to heal and slabs are more difficult to trigger. Look for cornices, drifts, and blowing snow to help you anticipate wind-loaded features you want to avoid.

    You could encounter two different wind slabs on Friday. Older, bigger, and scarier slabs likely formed during the storm over the past few days. A blanket of powder might hide this lurking problem from your view. So, look for bigger clues like drifts and cornices to help you anticipate where these larger avalanches could live. Fortunately, they should be gaining strength and becoming harder to trigger. However, they could involve lots of snow and grow big enough to bury you. 

    New shallow, and possibly easier to trigger, slabs may start to form Friday as the winds shift to the South and become strong. Fortunately, these small wind slabs will be much simpler to spot. Look for blowing snow and pay attention to the wind direction to figure out where these small avalanches could emerge. Even though they should be relatively harmless, don’t let them take you for a ride through rocks or over a cliff.

Avalanche Discussion

Friday’s break in the weather should continue to allow the snowpack to heal and the avalanche danger to decline. This week's storm brought 12-18” of snow to some locations of the East South zone, with showers adding another few inches on Thursday. For many locations, this doubled the snow depth and dramatically increased opportunities for recreation. 

On Thursday, an NWAC forecaster at White Pass was able to sneak a few peaks at the Mt Aix, Pinegrass Ridge, and Darland Mt areas through breaks in the clouds. While coverage has significantly increased, the snowpack still seems shallow with numerous obstacles. Expect open creeks, exposed rocks, and shallowly buried bushes to make travel more difficult and dangerous. With so many things to hit, even a small avalanche could hurt you by carrying you through or into these terrain traps.
