Lo esencial

Hard, icy snow surfaces are widespread across avalanche terrain today. Generally safe avalanche conditions exist across the forecast area. Mountaineering skills and equipment are necessary for safe travel in avalanche terrain today to prevent a long-sliding fall.

Avalanche Discussion

0.46 inches of rain was introduced into the snowpack yesterday, adding to the 0.29 inches of rain from Sunday. The period of time with the highest snowpack instability has now passed, but water will continue to drain from the snowpack for the next several hours. Backcountry travelers today are likely to see or hear running water coming from main watershed areas and notice that streams, like Little Headwall, may be blown out and running in full force. Though avalanche concerns have been largely eliminated today, other hazards have presented themselves in light of this rain event. These will include the potential for long-sliding-falls in steep, icy terrain and undermined snow in some areas, especially near streambeds.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to submit observations of snow and avalanche conditions, both inside and outside our avalanche forecast area. Please keep them coming.

The Lion Head Summer Trail is closed for the season due to avalanche risk. The Lion Head Winter Route is open.
