At the upper elevations new snow is accumulating on good sliding surfaces. Shallow slides involving the new snow are possible on steep slopes and in cliff areas. Below an elevation of 8,000 feet rain is falling on areas of loose unconsolidated snow. Wet slides are possible on very steep terrain features.

    Areas of rain soaked snow exist below an elevation of 8,000 feet. Wet slides are possible on very steep terrain features. These slides could be triggered by humans or release naturally and could step down to the ground.

    At the upper elevations small pockets of wind slab formed by southwest winds and loose snow sluffs are likely to be easily triggered by skiers and riders who venture into cliff areas and steep avalanche starting zones. These pockets could be up to a foot in depth.

Avalanche Discussion

The center of the storm in the Great Basin is forecast to track south and east of our forecast region. This system will bring one to four inches of snow to the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges overnight. Heavy snowfall is expected in the Wind River Range. Periods of light snowfall are possible over the Teton Range and Yellowstone National Park. Winds will back to the northeast and increase to 25 with gusts to 40 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s in the mountains and in the 30s and 40s in the valleys.At the mid and upper elevations skiers and riders who venture into very steep avalanche starting zones and cliff areas could trigger isolated pockets of soft slab and loose snow sluffs. These shallow slabs and sluffs should only involve new snow that has recently accumulated on crusty old snow surfaces. These small slides could carry a person a long ways in very steep chutes and couloirs. Wet slides may still be a concern in isolated terrain features at the lower elevations. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW. Greater hazard likely exist above an elevation of 10,500 feet in the Teton Range.
