Warm, mild conditions will persist today and through the holiday weekend. Low danger dominates and avalanche activity unlikely. Below treeline, snow is soft and sticky with variable crusts. Near and above treeline, the snowpack has been capped off by a breakable, icy glaze... slide-for-life conditions very dangerous for climbing and skiing... Merry Christmas!
Avalanche Discussion
Expect windy conditions above treeline over exposed terrain. Warm temperatures will continue to deteriorate snow surfaces on all aspects. We've got some grade A - Shasta plaster out there. The area snowpack is locked up tight. Warm temps will keep things soft down lower. Avalanche activity is very unlikely until we receive more snow. On Mt. Shasta, we have 51 inches measured at treeline, 8,000 feet. Castle Lake area boasts 48 inches. Ash Creek Butte, 49 inches and Mt. Eddy, 31 inches. Early December brought the majority of the snow we have on the ground. The faucet shut off December 11th and has been dry until the recent, small 12/22 rain event. Fingers crossed the last week of December will finish off like it started. Don't fight it, ride it!
