The most dangerous slopes are steep wind-drifted slopes directly below ridgetop. Hard slabs of snow sit over very soft, collapsible weak layers. It's difficult to know which slopes have this hard over soft setup until you are out on them. It's best to avoid steep north, northeast, and east-facing slopes in the alpine. Any avalanche that you trigger can break near the ground and be very hard to escape.
