You can trigger a large avalanche on many steep slopes. You might trigger one below or adjacent to steep terrain, so give steep slopes a wide buffer. The most dangerous slopes face northwest through north to east where 2 to 3 feet of recent storm snow rests above fragile snow layers. Wind-drifted slopes will hold thicker slabs, which could break even deeper. Look for safer options in lower-angled wind-sheltered terrain.
