If you make it out for this wet, windy day, stick to sheltered, lower-angle terrain. If you make it to upper elevations, this is probably where the most wet avalanche activity will happen, since this is where a thicker layer of dry snow exists. Lower down, shallower snow may be saturated and could slide down to the ground.

    Most avalanche activity will be high up in the alpine, where the driest snow existd. These avalanches will probably be limited to the upper layers of the snowpack. Most of the upper-elevation dry snow was heavy and wind-affected before the rain, so it'll take more than just a sprinkling of rain before avalanches start to occur. Choose lower-angle terrain for your outing on Wednesday, and if you see natural avalanches, then consider avoiding runouts of large paths. 

    Lower down where the snow is thinner, if you find punchy and saturated snow down to the ground, the entire depth of the snow may avalanche on steep slopes. Consider steering around any lingering saturated snow pockets on steep slopes, and maybe even avoid the  runouts beneath these areas if you notice any natural avalanches.

    Example photo: Wet loose avalanches are expected to run at upper elevations on Wednesday. They'll likely initiate from rocks bands and trees, and in confined gullies. 

Avalanche Discussion

The last atmospheric river wrapped up early Tuesday morning with a burst of snow. Four inches of dry snow over the old wet snow was reported at Stevens Pass Ski area at about 5000ft, and we expect there is a thicker layer of dry snow higher in the alpine. This snow will be the first to run during this atmospheric river starting Tuesday night. By the end of the day Wednesday, there could be another 5 inches of water- nearly all falling as rain to the top of our upper elevation band. This is a good day to stick to gentler terrain if you choose to brave this round of the atmospheric river.
