Wet snow avalanches are a possibility today on all aspects as warm temperatures heat up snow surfaces. Look for recent avalanche activity and rollerballs to let you know the snow is getting too warm. Travel on lower-angled slopes or earlier in the day when snow is colder to help you decrease your exposure.

    Solar slopes have seen two days of warm temperatures and sunshine. Wet loose avalanches have since occurred and may continue to produce today. With the possibility of increasing cloud cover, we may see some greenhouse warming of lower elevation northerly slopes for the first time since our last storm. 

    Assess terrain for signs of wet instability in your area. Rocky outcrops, vegetated slopes, and areas with thin snow cover will be the most likely areas for wet snow avalanches. Rollerballs and pinwheels are obvious precursors of Wet Loose avalanches. Sinking up to your boot-tops in slushy snow is also a bad sign. Wet Loose avalanches can entrain heavy snow that is difficult to escape from. The best way to manage Wet Loose avalanches is to travel when the snow surface is colder. Time your trips to avoid crossing on or under very steep slopes in the heat of the day.

In addition to wet loose snow, you may find small wind slabs or loose dry instability in isolated areas.

As we look forward to a large winter storm entering the region Tuesday evening, we are tracking snow surfaces, coverage, and snowpack structures. We're noting that we have buried weak layers and developing facet crust combos in the upper snowpack, and we are still seeing propagating test results on old facets in the southern reaches of our forecast zone.
