Triggering an avalanche of wind drifted snow up 1- 3 feet thick is possible today, especially in east facing ravines. These slides are more likely where the wind has formed stiff drifts from the recent snow. Identify these drifts of concern by looking for a smooth, pillow-like snow surface. You can reduce your risk of triggering an avalanche by avoiding steep slopes loaded with wind drifted snow.

    25+ inches of new snow in the last week, combined with strong and shifting winds have created wind slabs 1-3 feet thick on steep northeast, east and southeast aspects in east facing ravines. Multiple layers of concern exist below the surface of the snow where wind-transported snow sits atop slick, melt/freeze crusts.  Moderate to stubborn instability was found in these layers yesterday.     Field observations suggest that snow surface texture is a poor indicator of snowpack instability within the current snowpack. Weak layers well beneath the snow surface proved to be reactive on both smooth wind protected slabs and also slabs with surface texture exposed to the wind. Dig down to assess the stability of this interface while understanding that variability exists across the terrain. Practice safe travel techniques and good terrain management by traveling one-at-a-time in avalanche terrain and reduce overhead hazard with careful, strategic route planning.

Avalanche Discussion

Forecasters in the field yesterday found multiple layers of concern within the snowpack. Overall, multiple instabilities exist that are stubbornly reactive to a load. A light density change within the top layers of recent snow demonstrated compressive failure but more concerning is the chance of triggering a much deeper, larger avalanche by stressing a weak layer of facets near one of the buried melt freeze crusts. 

Moving forward for the upcoming week, the weak layers within the new snow mentioned above are likely to heal, but cold weather may drive continued facet formation deeper in the snowpack and work to maintain or further increase these deeper instabilities.

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
