Triggering an avalanche in very steep upper elevation terrain, while unlikely, cannot be ruled out. Approach this terrain with caution and avoid it during the heat of the day. Warm temperatures and direct sunlight will melt snow surfaces and make travel challenging. In the mid and lower elevations, obstacles such as rocks and vegetation are at or just below the surface, increasing the chances for injury today.

    Weak snow that formed in November lurks below dense slabs that formed in early December. The likelihood of triggering these slabs has been following a downward trend. This general trend will continue today. Slab depths range from 2-5 feet. Very steep terrain above 8,500 feet harbors this combination and should be approached with caution. Rising temperatures during the day will increase the odds of triggering. Involvement in any avalanche today carries a high potential for injury due to thin coverage and early season conditions.

    Large natural avalanche that occurred at the end of the storm on Dec 10th in the nearby Teton Range.  Slab formed by wind loading looks to have failed on the persitent weak layer buried in early November. 

Avalanche Discussion

A second night of mild overnight temperatures will make for a short window of supportable surfaces today. While clear skies and cold valley temps have allowed for shallow re-freezing of some surfaces, expect travel to be difficult as snow surfaces warm and lose strength. 

The persistent slab problem is confined to the upper elevations and in some shaded, mid-elevation terrain. While snowpack tests have shown the continued potential for propagation, multiple days of melt-freeze have helped to increase the overall strength of the snow. This problem is trending towards an outlier issue in that the likelihood of triggering is on the low end of the scale. Despite this improving trend, it is important to remain vigilant, especially in very steep and unsupported terrain. Warm overnight temperatures combined with daytime warming will increase the odds of triggering today.
