Avalanche danger is LOW. Evaluate exposed terrain for the possibility of small, isolated wind slabs. Assess sunny aspects for warming surface snow and small loose wet instabilities as temperatures climb through mid-week.

Reports of any recent instability in the mountains of the Eastern Sierra are scarce. Last week’s new snow continues to settle and bond to the variable old snow surfaces. Winds have been periodically strong enough to transport snow in the past few days and there is the chance you could identify a small, isolated wind slab in exposed areas near and above tree-line. Perform your own localized assessments of conditions before committing to steep or complex terrain.

Warming temperatures may bring about some early warning signs of loose wet instabilities on slopes with direct sun exposure, particularly at lower elevations. Sticky snow, rollerballs, increasing boot/ski penetration and falling rock can be indications of this problem.

Continue to keep the variable surface conditions in the front of your mind. Pleasant riding conditions can be found on certain aspects and elevation bands. The distribution of last week’s snow was variable throughout the forecast area and depending on where you choose to travel there is still plenty of adventure to be had battling rough surfaces, shallowly buried obstacles and very firm/smooth snow.
