Lo esencial

Partly cloudy skies and increasing winds will limit the potential for concerning surface warming today. Monitor for changing conditions and be ready to retreat from steep slopes, start zones, and the runouts of avalanche paths if the upper snowpack becomes wet and unconsolidated.

Partly cloudy skies and increasing winds are likely to keep surface warming in check for the most part. However, some surface moistening and an increased risk of rockfall should be expected during the day today.  Steep slopes with solar influence near and below treeline are areas of greater concern, particularly in areas near rock out-croppings or cliff bands, and tight couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified.  Keep an eye out for early warning signs such as moist punchy surface snow, rollerballs & pinwheels, and increasing boot and ski penetration. These are clues that may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Be wary of your exposure to large cornices and terrain features that increase the consequences of an avalanche.  Be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects and lower-angle terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Avalanche Discussion

Significant avalanche activity will be unlikely today, however, it is always prudent to monitor for changing conditions and keep an eye out for isolated instabilities. In addition to the risk of surface warming today variable surface conditions and difficult access should remain top of mind. Tools like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary equipment depending on where you wish to travel. Parking may still be limited at trailheads and many access roads in the region are closed below the snowline after sustaining significant flood damage this winter. Factor in extra time to account for the potential of a long and arduous approach and keep in mind that driving around closures can have negative impacts on the ecosystem.
