New snow and wind are creating dangerous avalanche conditions near and above Treeline on all aspects. With continued snowfall predicted we expect these conditions to continue throughout the weekend as more weight is added to the snowpack. All travel in avalanche terrain should be avoided.

    Yesterday’s field observations reported strong winds with frequent direction changes. Wind slabs were found on all aspects at upper elevations in the East Cabinets. Winds will decrease today to around 12 mph with predicted gusts in the mid 20's. It is very likely that you will trigger an avalanche if you step into any steep and wind loaded terrain at upper elevations today.

    The most recent snowfall rolled in with relatively warm temperatures which has created an "upside down cake" in the upper portion of our snowpack.  Stability tests on Thursday produced failure and propagation below these denser layers of snow. As the snow continues to pile up this storm slab issue will become more dangerous and easier to trigger.

Avalanche Discussion

Let's start with the bad news. Strong winds and steady snowfall have created some prime conditions for avalanche development at upper elevations. With a quick look at the weather, you can bet these hazardous conditions will likely persist through the Christmas weekend. The best advice I can give you right now is to stay out of steep terrain and avoid being in or below any avalanche paths. If you still want to get out for a ride stay below the treeline and ride on slopes that are less than 30 degrees in steepness. At lower elevations there is still an abundant amount of vegetation anchoring the snowpack and you are less likely to encounter the wind slab issues found in the upper terrain.

The good news, winter is on and we are building up snowpack. Soon all those rocks, logs and stumps will be buried, and you will be able to pin the throttle without breaking your machine or tearing a hole in those fancy skis you just bought. Our current avalanche problems consisting of wind and storm slab issues are all short-term problems. Once it stops snowing those hazards will subside with a few days of settling. So, a little patience right now is all that is needed to deal with the current scenario. Attached below is a short video clip of Thursdays winds in the East Cabinets, it's not the highest resolution but it gives an idea of what the conditions were out there yesterday.
