You will be able to trigger an avalanche on Monday as a storm impacts the mountain with heavy snowfall and very strong winds. Anticipate avalanche hazard rising throughout the day as the wind rapidly transports snow and builds fresh slabs.  Travel safely by seeking wind-sheltered terrain, giving cornices wide berth, and avoiding lee slopes over 30 degrees.

    Very strong winds will rapidly form fresh and sensitive wind slabs which you will be able to trigger. Monday's storm should impact Mt Hood in the dark morning hours so expect to find wind slabs beginning to develop by the time you leave the trailhead. The likelihood of triggering a wind slab and the size of a potential wind slab will continue to increase through the day and as you move higher into more wind affected terrain. As always, use blowing snow and cornice formation as visual clues where slabs may be forming. Hollow sounding and firm or textured snow are other clues that wind transport is building slabs. The winds are forecast to be strong enough that slabs may develop further downslope than normal so be alert for cross-loaded terrain features and midslope slab formation. 

    Blowing snow, firm and textured snow, and cornice formation are all evidence that wind slabs are likely to be forming on lee slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

We've had several days of nice weather and quiet avalanche conditions. That changes Monday. The snow surface in most locations is a melt-freeze crust or scoured to firm wind effected snow.  This will provide a good sliding surface for potential avalanches as new snow is deposited or transported by the wind. Wind slabs are the major player for tomorrow's forecast, but you may still encounter wind-sheltered areas where a storm slab could develop. There is some uncertainty in the weather forecast about the timing of the cold front passing and the onset of precipitation. The takeaway here is that depending on the timing and intensity of the precip and the temperatures new snow may or may not bond well to the old surface. If you find yourself in sheltered terrain with more than ~6 inches of snow evaluate the bond between the fresh storm snow and the old surface before committing to open slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Use low consequence test slopes to examine the bond between new and old snow.

Keep alert to changing conditions throughout the day Monday. Avalanche hazard will continue to rise during the day as wind transports snow continually and more snow stacks up. Poor visibility may hamper your ability to assess the terrain you plan to travel in. When in doubt, choose lower angled terrain.
