Avalanche Activity

The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on steep shady slopes at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions.

The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions, especially at their margins. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular at transitions into gullies and bowls and on steep shady slopes above approximately 2200 m. Avalanches can in isolated cases penetrate deep layers and reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. In particular adjacent to ridgelines at high altitude snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. On sunnier slopes where temperatures are less cold, the hard surface of the snowpack will gradually soften over the course of the day.
