  • Gliding snow

Tendency

Saturday will be sunny, with outstanding visibility in the wake of the cold front. Avalanche danger is not expected to change.

Avalanche Activity

Low avalanche danger, but isolated danger zones on shady high-altitude slopes. Glide-snow activity on south-facing slopes.

In the rimline ranges, avalanche danger is generally low. Nevertheless, isolated avalanche prone locations are found in transitions from shallow to deep snow (persistent weak layer). On sunny slopes in steep grassy terrain, isolated naturally triggered glide-snow avalanches can be expected. Glide cracks (fishbones) are red flags.

Snowpack Structure

On sunny slopes the snowpack is melt-freeze encrusted. Above 1800 m on shady slopes, weak layer weaken the entire snowpack. On sunny slopes, glide cracks have formed on steep grass-covered slopes.

Weather Synopsis

A cold front will lower temperatures, but south of the Main Alpine Ridge there will hardly be any fresh snow. Winds from the northwest will be brisk. At 2000 m: temperatures dropping from -1 to -9 degrees during the course of the day.
